Why We Started

We live in a world overflowing with information, where statistics and facts are often presented without context or selectively interpreted to support a particular narrative. In Iraq, this challenge is especially visible. Important data exists, but it is frequently scattered across reports, difficult to access, or presented in ways that make meaningful interpretation difficult.

Iraq Energy Monitor was created from a simple belief: data should help people understand reality, not obscure it.

Our goal is to collect, organise, and explain complex energy data from official sources, transforming fragmented information into clear and accessible insights. By placing numbers in their proper context, we aim to support informed discussion, better planning, smarter investment decisions, and a deeper public understanding of Iraq's energy sector.

We do not seek to promote a particular viewpoint. Instead, we believe that transparent data, careful analysis, and open access to information are essential foundations for better decisions and a stronger future.

Our Mission

Iraq Energy Monitor is a professional analytical platform dedicated to tracking Iraq's energy security challenges. We believe that transparency and accessible data are the foundation for better policy, smarter investment, and public awareness.

Data Governance & Methodology

Official Source Extraction

Our primary data is extracted meticulously from official government reports — including the Ministry of Electricity's annual statistical bulletins and SOMO's export data — as well as open institutional supplements like the World Bank. Every data point is traced to a specific source document.

Standardisation & Cleaning

We convert static, inaccessible documents — PDFs, scanned bulletins, tables in Arabic — into dynamic, machine-readable Excel datasets. This is where most of the work happens: official tables frequently contain arithmetic errors where row and column totals don't reconcile, inconsistent formatting from one year to the next, and figures that are ambiguous or unclear. We recalculate every total, flag and correct discrepancies against the underlying source, and manually review any figure that isn't self-evident before it's standardised into a common unit (MWh, GW, BCM, MBPD) and format. Nothing is published until it checks out.

Contextualisation & Visualisation

Raw numbers rarely tell the full story. We add analytical context — comparing Iraq to regional benchmarks, calculating derived metrics like supply deficits and import dependency — and visualise everything so patterns become immediately legible.

Version Control & Updates

Each dataset is versioned and dated. When source institutions publish updated figures, we revise accordingly and note what changed. The coverage and last-updated date are displayed on every chart and data page.
